Healthy mind – Build Meditation Habit !

In 2013, I was going under lot of stress. Under pressure to perform and as well stressed and working hard for not to get fired, as there have been layoffs in the office. At home, kids were just 2 years old and we were handful. It’s not like that we were not enjoying parenting the growing kids, if you are parents like me, then you know what I am talking about. The mind and thoughts were all over. I didn’t know how to manage and how to handle situations and experiences.

Books and reading has major impact on my thought process and mind. I came across book the Autobiography of Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda  which was mentioned by my virtual mentor and entrepreneur  guru Alok Kejriwal. It was designated as one of the “100 Most Important Spiritual Books of the 20th Century”. From my college days 2001, I was introduced to yoga and meditations but after graduating and being in the rat race of corporate world, I lost touch and never went back to mediation. After reading the book, I was determined to learn Kriya Yoga and started learning mediation. I was also inspired by book The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra.  I started learning about meditation. I joined 21 day mediation by Deepak Chopra and Oprah Winfrey. This gave the experience of peace and calmness and I felt really well and I knew this is the path I should be on. However, after doing meditation for another 2-3 weeks, I lost my discipline and stopped meditating. I was always looking for guided mediation and it was hard for me to register for more paid meditation programs online. I was looking to learn to do on my own. 

Then I came across AOL (Art of Living Organisation) and learned Sudarshan Kriya and Sahaj Samadhi Meditation. It was spot on and I learned how to meditate with my own Mantra effortlessly. It became part of my life and I could feel and observe the changes and effects it has on me. I am now more aware for experiences, I became more energetic and more focused. They say, the more inwards you go the more exuberant you become. I did Happiness Programs from Art of Living, learned simple meditation techniques with powerful mantras and started volunteering for AOL, Sweden. I became the part of AOL in Stockholm. Initially my wife was not interested but eventually she joined and also learned Sudarshan Kriya and Sadhana. When you do sadhana and meditation together, the experience gets doubled. Now we stick to daily routine of meditation, yoga and kriya, we both know the benefits and we encourage our friends. We are so grateful for this and thankful that we got the opportunity to learn and practice. 

If you want to get started, start small and simple. In the beginning, if you don’t know how to start, get help, start with guided meditations and hold on to it. You would loose track, but keep coming back to it no matter what. Start sitting for 1 min, then 5 min and then increase. One should meditate at-least 20 min a day, ideally, twice a day. I am still not there yet, but I do Kriya yoga and meditation every morning. Sometimes, I do meditation twice daily but I need to stick to it. I hope to build the discipline.  Here is my meditation schedule: 

  • 5.45 am:  Wake-up, get ready
  • 6.15 am – 7.15 am, Kriya Yoga and Meditation 
  • 7.15 am: Breakfast, Drop Kids and Office Commute
  • 3.30 pm – 3-50 pm: Meditation in Office. 

Sometimes, I don’t get time for meditation in office, I come home by 6 pm and do meditation. Set your own time, find your own rhythm and stick to it. It is alright to miss one or two days, but again comeback and stick to it and start. This will immensely help you, as it did for me. 

Another really important aspect for mediation is knowledge. One should read books and learn from experiences from others. One should read at-least for one hour a day. As the likes of Warren Buffet, Bill Gates and Elon Musk emphasized their success on reading, I do not need to tell more about it. Reading at-least for 1 hour will really improve your understanding. Go for hard book, e-book or audio book. Read from autobiographies, success stories, and read from the subject which you think is you require to get more knowledge.
